Samantha: Welcome to The State of Tech, The European Edition, Thursday June eleven, 2026. I'm Samantha Lawrence.

Bob: And I'm Bob Russell. Today: NEURA Robotics lands one of Europe's biggest funding rounds ever, Xpeng's CEO bets personally on humanoid robots, a half-billion-dollar AI fund built by Asian telecoms and banks, US companies brace for a wave of AI and cybersecurity lawsuits, and to close out, two things you can actually use today: the AI-native email platform from Coremail, and BostonGene's precision cancer tool. Let's get into it.

German robotics firm NEURA raises one point four billion dollars to scale cognitive humanoid robots worldwide.

Samantha: We're starting in Germany, because a company called NEURA Robotics just pulled off one of the largest funding rounds we've seen in European tech this year. One point four billion dollars in a Series C round. And the names on the cheque are striking: Tether, Qualcomm, Amazon, and NVIDIA, all in.

Bob: To put that in context, this is not a chatbot company or another AI search tool. NEURA builds physical robots that learn on the job. Think of a robot arm or a humanoid that watches what a worker does, picks it up, and gets better over time. The pitch they made to investors is what they call Physical AI, robots that can actually move around a factory floor or a hospital corridor and make decisions in real time.

Samantha: And the company talks about something called the Neuraverse. Which sounds like a marketing word, but underneath it is a fairly simple idea: every NEURA robot shares what it learns with every other NEURA robot. So one machine figures out how to handle a fragile package, and overnight, the whole fleet knows how to do it.

Bob: That's the bet. Whether it works at scale is another question. Humanoid robotics has been the field of broken promises for two decades. But the money tells you investors think the timing is different now. Cheap sensors, much better AI models, and real demand from manufacturers who can't find enough workers.

Samantha: And this is where Europe gets interesting. NEURA is based near Stuttgart, in the heart of German industrial country. So you have a European company, funded partly by American and Asian giants, building robots aimed straight at factories, warehouses, and eventually healthcare settings.

Bob: Compared to the hundreds of billions flowing into AI infrastructure in the United States, one point four billion is still modest. But for European hardware, it's significant. It's the kind of round that can actually pay for factories, hiring engineers away from competitors, and rolling out machines into real workplaces. The bottom line is, Europe rarely produces winners in consumer tech, but in industrial robotics it still has a shot. NEURA just got the fuel to take it.

Samantha: And worth flagging for listeners: if cognitive robots really do start showing up in European factories over the next two years, that reopens the whole conversation about automation, jobs, and retraining. Not tomorrow, but sooner than people expect.

Xpeng CEO takes personal command of humanoid robot push, targeting mass production by year-end.

Bob: Staying with robots, but moving to China. He Xiaopeng, the chief executive of the electric car maker Xpeng, has just announced he's personally taking over the company's robotics business. And his stated goal is mass production of a humanoid robot called IRON by the end of this year.

Samantha: This is a pretty dramatic move. When the CEO of a listed car company says, I'm running this myself, that's a signal to investors that robots are no longer a side project. Xpeng is now talking openly about what it calls physical AI, which for them means humanoids, self-driving taxis, and even flying cars.

Bob: And it puts them in direct competition with Tesla's Optimus programme, with several other Chinese automakers, and indirectly with the company we just talked about, NEURA. The race is essentially: who gets a working humanoid robot off the production line first, at a price someone will actually pay?

Samantha: The why is also straightforward. Car makers already know how to build complex machines in high volume. They have the supply chains, the factories, the robotics expertise on the assembly line itself. So pivoting some of that capacity to humanoid robots is, in theory, less of a leap than starting from scratch.

Bob: For European industry this matters in two ways. First, if China starts exporting affordable humanoid robots the way it exports electric cars, European factories will face the same competitive squeeze they're already feeling on EVs. Second, European carmakers like BMW and Mercedes are also experimenting with humanoids, but more cautiously. The pressure to move faster is now real.

NTT, SK Group and partners launch a five hundred million dollar AI fund to back startups across three continents.

Bob: Our third story stays in Asia but reaches into Europe. Four major players, the Japanese telecom giant NTT, South Korea's SK Group, Chunghwa Telecom from Taiwan, and the Development Bank of Japan, have set up a fund worth five hundred million dollars. It will invest specifically in AI startups, and explicitly says it will look in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Samantha: The fund has a name, the IOWN AI Fund, and it'll be run by a new Tokyo-and-Silicon-Valley outfit called Catalight Capital. The focus is on the infrastructure side of AI. So not the chatbot you use on your phone, but the data centres, the optical networks, the plumbing that makes real-time AI possible.

Bob: And there's a specific technical angle worth flagging without getting into the weeds. The IOWN part of the name stands for an effort to build data centres connected by light instead of traditional electronics. The promise is much lower energy use and much faster responses. Whether it delivers is still open, but it's where these telecoms are betting.

Samantha: For European startups, this is genuine new money on the table. Five hundred million is not enormous by American standards, but it's a dedicated AI infrastructure pool, and European founders working on energy-efficient computing or networking now have another door to knock on.

Bob: It also fits a pattern. Asian capital is increasingly active in European deep tech, partly because valuations are lower here than in the US, partly because Europe has strong research in optics, photonics and chip design. The risk, of course, is that the most successful startups end up serving Asian customers first, not European ones. That's a familiar story.

Samantha: Notable is that European public funding for this kind of infrastructure remains fragmented across member states. Private money from outside the bloc is filling part of that gap. Industry groups have been arguing for years that Europe needs its own coordinated AI infrastructure strategy. So far, that's mostly still on paper.

Survey finds AI and cybersecurity threats are driving a sharp rise in US corporate lawsuits.

Bob: Our fourth story is a warning sign coming out of the United States. The law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has published its annual litigation survey, and the headline finding is blunt: cybersecurity and AI are now driving a measurable jump in the number of lawsuits American companies face.

Samantha: The sectors most exposed are the ones you'd expect: energy, banks, healthcare, and tech itself. Corporate lawyers surveyed for the report say they're seeing more disputes around data privacy, more disputes around cybersecurity breaches, and a new wave of cases tied specifically to AI, things like algorithmic discrimination, copyright claims against training data, and faulty AI outputs.

Bob: And what makes this different from previous years is the combination of federal and state-level pressure in the US. Companies are being squeezed from multiple directions at once, and the legal costs are climbing.

Samantha: For European companies the question is whether this American pattern will land here too. The European Union already has the AI Act on the books, plus the General Data Protection Regulation, plus the upcoming Cyber Resilience Act. So the rules exist. What's been less tested is the litigation around them.

Bob: Legal observers point out that European enforcement tends to come through regulators first, fines from data protection authorities, rather than through class-action lawsuits the way it works in America. But that may shift as more consumer groups take AI cases to court, and as the AI Act's complaint mechanisms come fully online.

Samantha: The takeaway for European businesses is fairly concrete. If you're deploying AI in customer-facing decisions, hiring, credit, healthcare, you should assume the legal scrutiny is coming. Documenting how your AI systems make decisions is no longer just good practice. It's a defence strategy.

Bob: And to close out, two things to actually look at today, both aimed at people who work with sensitive data.

Coremail's AI-native email system turns the inbox into a connected workspace for businesses.

Samantha: The first is from a company called Coremail. They've launched what they call an AI-Native Secure Email System, and the basic pitch is this: your work email becomes more than just a list of messages. It becomes a hub where AI helpers can summarise threads, draft replies, pull in data from other tools, and connect to your calendar and documents, all in one place.

Bob: The interesting technical detail is that Coremail supports something called the Model Context Protocol, which is becoming a kind of common language for AI tools to talk to each other safely. In plain terms, it means the AI assistant in your inbox can securely connect to your project management software, your customer database, or your finance system, without you having to copy and paste between them.

Samantha: And the security angle is the differentiator they're pushing. A lot of free AI tools send your data off to be processed somewhere else. Coremail is targeting companies that can't accept that, law firms, hospitals, banks. The platform is positioned for enterprise customers rather than individual users, so it's something to ask your IT department about rather than download tonight.

Bob: For European businesses that's a relevant angle. With strict data residency rules and the AI Act now in force, having an email system that keeps AI processing under your control rather than sending it to an unknown server is genuinely useful. Worth checking whether Coremail offers a European data centre option before signing anything.

Samantha: And if you're a smaller business, the broader lesson still applies. Ask your existing email provider, Microsoft, Google, whoever, what their AI features actually do with your messages. The answers vary more than you'd think.

BostonGene presents an AI tool that helps match cancer patients to the right immunotherapy.

Bob: Our second find is more specialised, but worth knowing about if you or someone close to you is dealing with cancer treatment. A company called BostonGene is presenting an AI system at a medical conference this week that helps doctors decide which immunotherapy is most likely to work for a specific patient.

Samantha: The way it works, simplified: the system takes a tumour sample plus a wide range of patient data, genetic information, immune system markers, scan results, and feeds it through an AI model that's been trained on thousands of cases. The output is a prediction about how a particular patient will respond to particular drugs.

Bob: This is not something patients use directly. It's a tool for oncologists. But the reason it matters is that immunotherapy can be transformative for some cancers and ineffective or harmful for others. Getting the choice right earlier saves time, money, and side effects.

Samantha: For European patients, the practical question is whether their hospital has access to this kind of analysis. Major cancer centres in Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the UK are increasingly partnering with AI diagnostics firms. So if you're navigating a cancer diagnosis, it's a fair question to ask: is my treatment plan being supported by this kind of tool, and if not, why not?

Bob: It's also a reminder that the most consequential AI right now isn't always the most visible. The chatbot in your browser gets all the attention. The model deciding which drug a patient receives, quietly, gets much less.
