Samantha: Welcome to The State of Tech, The European Edition, Friday June twelve, 2026. I'm Samantha Lawrence.

Bob: And I'm Bob Russell. Today: a former Amazon cloud chief launches a ten billion dollar AI infrastructure company, SpaceX prices its Nasdaq market debut in one of the biggest listings of the year, Europe's tech chief warns against leaning too heavily on American technology, Nvidia plants a major AI manufacturing hub in South Korea, and to close out, two things you can actually try today: the note-taking app Obsidian, and the firefighting and rescue drone platform from Skydio. Let's get into it.

Former AWS boss Adam Selipsky launches a ten billion dollar AI infrastructure firm called Helix, backed by KKR.

Samantha: Our lead story today: a brand new company called Helix has just stepped onto the stage, and it's starting big. Investment giant KKR has teamed up with Adam Selipsky, the former chief executive of Amazon's cloud business, to launch this AI infrastructure firm at an initial valuation of ten billion dollars. The pitch is that Helix wants to be a one-stop-shop for the messy, expensive, complicated job of building and running the data centres that power artificial intelligence.

Bob: And that pitch matters because right now, if you're a company that wants to train or run a serious AI model, you're juggling chip suppliers, real estate, power contracts, cooling, networking, and a queue at the cloud providers. Helix is saying: come to us, we'll handle all of that under one roof. Selipsky knows this world from the inside. He ran Amazon Web Services for years, which is the largest cloud platform on the planet.

Samantha: And KKR brings the wallet and the patience. Building AI capacity is enormously capital-hungry. We're talking gigawatts of electricity, billions in chips, and land deals that take years to close. A private investment firm with deep pockets can move at a different pace than a public company watching its quarterly earnings.

Bob: What this signals is that AI infrastructure is becoming its own industry, separate from the big cloud platforms. Until recently, if you wanted compute at scale, you basically went to Amazon, Microsoft, or Google. Now you've got dedicated AI infrastructure players raising tens of billions to compete.

Samantha: For Europe, this lands in a sensitive spot. The continent is already worried about depending on American cloud providers, and Helix is, by design, another American-led player aiming to dominate the layer underneath every AI application. European regulators have been pushing for more local capacity, more local data, more local control. A new ten billion dollar competitor coming out of the gate with a Wall Street backer and a former AWS chief at the helm only sharpens that debate.

Bob: The bottom line: the question is no longer whether AI needs vast infrastructure. It's who owns that infrastructure, and where it sits. Helix is a bet that the answer for many companies will be: somebody else, somewhere else, just make it work.

SpaceX prices its Nasdaq debut at one hundred thirty-five dollars a share, raising about seventy-five billion dollars.

Samantha: Story two, and it is a big one. SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket company, has priced its initial public offering on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. Shares are set at one hundred and thirty-five dollars each, the ticker symbol is SPCX, and the offering is set to raise around seventy-five billion dollars. Trading opens later today. That makes it one of the largest IPOs of 2026.

Bob: And it ends years of speculation about when, or even whether, SpaceX would go public. The company has been one of the most-watched private firms in the world, with a hand in commercial rockets, satellite internet through Starlink, and crewed spaceflight. Once trading opens, public market investors get a direct way in.

Samantha: The scale here is worth pausing on. Seventy-five billion dollars in fresh capital is the kind of money that reshapes an industry. It funds more rocket development, more satellite launches, and almost certainly accelerates the Starship programme aimed at deep space missions.

Bob: For European investors, this is significant because it opens up access to a company that, until now, was reserved for a small circle of venture funds and insiders. Pension funds, asset managers, and retail investors across Europe can now hold a piece of SpaceX directly. That will ripple through portfolios that track the Nasdaq.

Samantha: It also raises competitive questions for Europe's own space sector. ArianeGroup, the European launcher industry, and emerging private players like Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg are all trying to carve out room in a market where SpaceX already dominates commercial launches. A newly cash-rich SpaceX makes that competition steeper.

Bob: And there's a strategic angle. Satellite internet, military communications, Earth observation: these are increasingly national security topics. European governments have been pushing for sovereign space capabilities. Watching the world's biggest space company list on a US exchange, and pull in seventy-five billion dollars on day one, will sharpen those conversations in Brussels and Paris.

Europe's tech chief warns against US dependence and signs a digital partnership with Brazil.

Bob: Story three. Europe's technology chief, Henna Virkkunen, used a speech at Web Summit Rio to deliver a pointed message: the European Union is too reliant on American tech companies, especially in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. And she paired that warning with action, announcing a new digital partnership with Brazil covering data governance, AI, digital infrastructure, and online platforms.

Samantha: The framing is what's striking. Virkkunen talked about digital sovereignty, about building Europe's own capacity, and about investing in AI that reflects European languages, content, and values. That's a clear signal that Brussels wants AI systems trained on more than just English-language American data.

Bob: And Brazil is an interesting partner choice. It's the largest economy in Latin America, has its own active debate about AI rules and platform regulation, and shares concerns about being dependent on a handful of US firms. Joining forces on data governance gives both sides more weight when negotiating with the big platforms.

Samantha: There's a practical layer too. Digital partnerships like this usually involve shared standards, joint research funding, and sometimes infrastructure cooperation. It's the kind of agreement that can quietly shape how AI products built in Europe or Brazil interoperate, and which rules apply when data crosses borders.

Bob: The tension here is that Europe's economy still runs heavily on American cloud platforms, American chips, and American AI models. Wanting sovereignty is one thing. Building the alternative is another, and it requires sustained investment over many years. Industry groups have argued that current European funding levels are well below what would be needed to truly close the gap.

Samantha: For European users and businesses, the near-term effect is more about direction than immediate change. Expect more procurement preferences for European providers in government contracts, more rules pushing for local data storage, and more pressure on US firms to partner with European companies rather than simply sell in.

Bob: Story four takes us to South Korea, where Nvidia is planning a significant AI factory hub. The chip giant is teaming up with major local conglomerates, including SK, LG, Naver, and Doosan, to expand AI semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen what people in the industry now call AI infrastructure.

Samantha: This is a hardware story, and it's worth dwelling on because it pulls together a lot of strands. South Korea is already a giant in memory chips, the components that store data and feed it into AI processors. SK and another major Korean firm together supply most of the high-bandwidth memory used in modern AI servers. Nvidia putting down roots there ties the design and the manufacturing layers even more tightly together.

Bob: And industry experts in Korea are talking about a sustained boom. Professor Lee Hyuk-jae of Seoul National University suggested that Korean semiconductor companies could see earnings approaching Nvidia's own. That's a striking claim, but it reflects how central memory chips have become to the economics of AI.

Samantha: For Europe, this is a reminder of where the centre of gravity sits in AI hardware. The US designs the leading chips, Taiwan manufactures them, South Korea supplies the memory, and Japan provides specialised materials and equipment. Europe has its own crown jewel, ASML in the Netherlands, which makes the lithography machines without which none of this works. But the assembly, the packaging, and the AI servers themselves are largely built elsewhere.

Bob: The European Chips Act was supposed to change part of that, with tens of billions in subsidies aimed at boosting local production. Critics argue the amounts committed are still far below what the US, China, and Korea are pouring in. A new Nvidia hub in Korea is another data point in that argument.

Samantha: The takeaway: the AI hardware map is being redrawn in real time, and Europe's role in it is mostly upstream, not downstream. That has consequences for jobs, for energy planning, and for who controls the supply when chips are scarce.

There's also a graph view that shows your notes as dots and connections, which sounds like a gimmick but turns out to be genuinely useful for spotting patterns.

Samantha: Setup is straightforward. Download it from obsidian.md, pick a folder on your computer where notes will live, and start typing. You can be productive within ten minutes. If you want it on your phone too, the mobile apps are free, and you can sync via your own Dropbox, iCloud, or any other folder syncing service.

Bob: There's also a healthy plugin ecosystem. You can add features like daily journaling, task management, even integration with AI assistants if you want help summarising long notes. But the core app does plenty on its own.

Samantha: For European users specifically, the privacy angle matters. Because your notes stay on your device by default, you don't have to think about which jurisdiction your data sits in, or whether a US cloud provider might be compelled to hand it over. It's local by design.

South Korea deploys AI-powered firefighting robots that go where humans cannot.

Samantha: And to wrap up, something inspired by a story from today's news that you can read more about right now. South Korea has just deployed AI-powered unmanned firefighting robots, developed by Hyundai Motor Group, donated to the National 119 Rescue Headquarters. These machines roll into burning buildings, collapsed structures, and toxic smoke zones that human firefighters cannot safely enter.

Bob: They carry infrared cameras enhanced by AI, high-capacity water cannons, and remote control systems. They send live information back to commanders outside, and they suppress flames directly. It's the kind of robotics story that often gets buried in headlines about chatbots, but it's a concrete example of AI saving lives in physical environments.

Samantha: What you can do today is take a look at the broader category. A practical entry point is Skydio, an American drone maker whose autonomous drones are being adopted by fire services and police forces in Europe and the US for exactly this kind of work. Their website shows real footage of drones flying inside damaged buildings and around accident scenes without a human pilot steering.

Bob: For most of us, we won't be buying a firefighting robot this afternoon. But if you're curious about where AI and robotics are actually being used right now, beyond the hype, spending ten minutes watching how these systems operate gives you a much clearer sense of what the technology can and cannot do. And if you work in local government or emergency services, it's worth knowing what's already available.

Samantha: For European fire brigades and city authorities, the Hyundai deployment is a model worth watching. Several European cities have already started pilots with autonomous drones for search and rescue. Expect more of that in the next year or two.
