Nobel Prize winner John Jumper leaves Google DeepMind for rival Anthropic in a seismic AI talent shift.

Samantha: We're starting with a move that says everything about where the AI industry is right now. John Jumper, the Google DeepMind vice president who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on AlphaFold, is leaving to join Anthropic. For context, AlphaFold is the AI system that cracked one of biology's hardest problems, predicting the shapes of proteins, which has accelerated drug discovery across the world. Jumper was a pivotal figure inside Google's AI coding development team, and now he's walking across the street to one of its biggest competitors.

Bob: And the timing matters. Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX are all in an open arms race for the most powerful AI models, and that race is increasingly being fought over a tiny pool of elite researchers. When a Nobel laureate switches sides, it's not just a hire, it's a signal. Anthropic gets credibility in scientific AI, which is one of the most lucrative frontiers, think drug design, materials, climate modelling. Google loses a face that helped define its scientific brand.

Samantha: For Europe, this is uncomfortable reading. The continent has world-class universities and research institutes, but the commercial gravity keeps pulling top talent to American labs with American compute budgets. European AI initiatives, including the EU's own AI factory plans, are trying to build local alternatives, but losing the option to recruit researchers of Jumper's calibre is a real strategic risk. The bottom line is that AI leadership is now measured in named individuals, and right now those individuals are concentrating in a handful of US companies.

Bob: There's also a subtle market signal here. Anthropic has been quietly building out its enterprise business, and it's the model of choice for several big European banks and consultancies. Adding a Nobel name to its research roster strengthens its pitch to regulated industries that want serious science behind their AI vendor, not just chatbots. Expect competitors to respond, probably with even bigger packages for the next big-name hire. The escalation isn't slowing down.

Santander gives AI tools to all one hundred and eighty-five thousand workers, chasing one point one five billion dollars in value.

Samantha: Next up, Santander, one of Europe's largest banks, is rolling out artificial intelligence tools to its entire workforce of one hundred and eighty-five thousand employees. The target is over one billion euros, around one point one five billion dollars, in business value between 2026 and 2028. What's striking is the shopping list: Microsoft's Copilot, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, and banking-specific tools from G42. Santander is essentially saying it won't pick one AI vendor, it'll deploy whichever works best for each task.

Bob: That multi-vendor approach is becoming the new normal for big enterprises, and it matters for two reasons. One, it gives the bank leverage in pricing and avoids being locked into a single supplier. Two, it tells you the AI market has matured enough that companies feel confident running several systems side by side. The goals are practical, faster information retrieval, smoother internal processes, better customer interactions. Not science fiction, just productivity at scale.

Samantha: For the European banking sector, this sets a clear precedent. Santander is the test case competitors will watch closely. If those efficiency gains materialise, expect Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, and ING to accelerate their own rollouts. And it puts pressure on European regulators, because the EU AI Act is still being implemented, and a deployment this large in financial services will be one of the first real stress tests of how the rules apply in practice. Customer-facing AI in a regulated industry is exactly the high-risk category Brussels has been writing rules around.

Bob: There's also a jobs question lurking underneath. Bob: At the G7 summit held in France from the fifteenth to the seventeenth of June, the CEOs of major AI companies, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei, were reportedly given treatment akin to heads of state. That's not a metaphor, it's how observers described the access and prominence they were granted. The summit discussions framed AI as a top-tier geopolitical issue, sitting alongside defence and trade rather than below them.

Samantha: This is a genuine shift in how power gets distributed in international diplomacy. Traditionally, G7 summits are about elected leaders negotiating with each other. Now you have unelected tech executives shaping the agenda on AI control, AI regulation, and how AI gets used in governance and global security. Some will argue that's necessary, the technology is moving faster than governments can legislate. Others will argue it's democratically problematic, because these executives answer to shareholders, not voters.

Bob: For Europe specifically, the dynamic is delicate. The EU has positioned itself as the world's AI regulator with the AI Act, and European leaders at the G7 will have wanted to defend that approach. But when American AI bosses are sitting at the table as near-equals, the regulatory conversation inevitably gets shaped by their commercial interests too. Expect the next round of G7 communiqués to include language that looks more like a negotiation between governments and AI companies than a pure policy declaration.

Samantha: And there's a competitive angle. European AI companies, Mistral, Aleph Alpha, were not given the same prominence, because they simply don't have the scale yet. That visibility gap reinforces the existing power balance. If Europe wants its own AI champions in the room at future summits, it needs them to be much bigger by then.

Marvell stock jumps over seven percent as Amazon may start selling Trainium AI chips to outside customers.

Bob: Marvell Technology saw its stock climb seven point two seven percent on Friday following reports that Amazon Web Services might start selling its custom Trainium AI chips directly to external data centres. Marvell is a crucial partner that helps design and co-develop those chips, so any external sales push translates directly into more business for Marvell. The company is also being added to the S&P 500 index, which gave the share price an extra boost.

Samantha: This is the chip story under the AI story. Until now, Amazon has used Trainium internally to train its own AI models and to offer cheaper AI compute to its cloud customers. Opening it up to external data centres would put Trainium in direct competition with Nvidia's chips for the first time in a meaningful way. And that's significant, because Nvidia has had an almost uncontested grip on the AI chip market, which has been one of the defining business stories of the past two years.

Bob: For European data centres and cloud operators, more options is good news. The current Nvidia bottleneck has meant long waiting lists and high prices, especially for smaller European cloud providers competing against the American hyperscalers. If Amazon's Trainium becomes available externally, European operators get a credible alternative supplier, which improves pricing power and reduces dependence on a single vendor.

Samantha: There's a strategic dimension too. The EU has been pushing for sovereign AI infrastructure, the idea that critical compute capacity should be built and run on European soil. More chip options make that vision easier to execute, because it widens the supplier base European projects can draw from. Whether Amazon actually pulls the trigger on external Trainium sales is still a question. But the market clearly thinks it's a real possibility, and Marvell shareholders are already cashing in on that expectation.

Bob: One thing to watch is how Nvidia responds. They've been hinting at pricing flexibility, and any serious competitive threat from Trainium could accelerate that. For customers, including European ones, that's potentially the most useful outcome of all.

A German startup launches Flow, a browser-based tool that builds 3D models with no GPU or installation needed.

Samantha: For European designers, hobbyists, indie game developers, or anyone who's ever been put off by the cost of professional 3D software, this is genuinely interesting. Traditional 3D tools like Blender are powerful but have a steep learning curve, and commercial alternatives can cost hundreds of euros per year. Running it in a browser also means it works on a basic laptop, which lowers the barrier even further. The company claims over a million existing users on its earlier products, so it's not a brand-new outfit, it's an established player with a new approach.

Bob: The use cases are broader than gaming. Think product design, architectural visualisation, marketing assets, even 3D-printed objects.
